Meet the Owner/Operators of the Occidental: David & Jackie Stewart
It’s not every day you meet two people as special as David & Jackie Stewart. Their joy radiates throughout the entire block of what is lovingly called Occidental Row.
Now if you talk to them, they won’t say they set out to own a historic museum and hotel. Instead, Jackie says they came to manage this place “by the grace of God”. And here they stay in the early 1900’s generously sharing and safeguarding this time and place for all the locals and those of us lucky enough to be passersby for an hour, a day, and sometimes unexpectedly longer…
“(Jackie and I have) worked side by side for 37 years now. We are a good team, and this is our baby... This hotel is a part of us now. It’s home to us, but this hotel belongs to the community. It’s a masterpiece, a work of art... a gem for this town, but it’s not a gold mine…It’s a labor of love.”
“When people walk in the front door of the lobby, and they hear the bell ring, you can see it in their faces. They are overcome,” Jackie said. “We really want to stay in that era.”
